As many as 20 properties have been lost in an out-of-control bushfire in the northern NSW village of Rappville, one of two emergency warning fires blazing through the region.

A house has also been lost in Laidley, Queensland, where another fast-moving fire forced the evacuation of 60 homes.

In New South Wales, former ABC worker Carol Duncan said her father and his partner had lost “absolutely everything” except the “clothes on his back” in the Busby’s Flat bushfire.

“My father’s home has been destroyed. Everything is gone. Please help if you can,” she wrote on Twitter.

“He has nothing. He’s been a battler his entire life. And what he did have is now a pile of ashes. I feel utterly helpless,” she wrote online before setting up a crowd-funding site that has already raised more than $6000.

She said her 83-year-old father is a “classic pensioner battler” and had survived lung cancer. He was sheltering from the fire in his shed until she saw warnings on Twitter and the NSW RFS sent a truck over to get him out.

“When I spoke with Dad after they’d taken him to the school, he told me they’d ‘lost everything but the shed’. But I now know that the shed was also incinerated.”

“So, the RFS people who went and got my Dad and his partner OUT OF THE SHED thanks to Twitter … saved my Dad’s life,” she said.

Another Rappville resident Danny Smith said: “I’ve lost the bloody sheds, the house, lost everything.”

“We might have saved the second place but everything else has gone.”

The RFS said the fire was very dangerous and spreading quickly. Four emergency warnings were issued for fires on Tuesday, but by 8.30pm two were left ravaging the area — at Busbys Flat and Drake.

Residents around the Busbys Flat fire, which included Rappville south of Casino, were told it’s too late to leave as the fire bore down on them on Tuesday afternoon.

NSW Police are asking people not to return to their homes in fire-affected areas as it was unsafe to do so.

At 10pm there are 49 bush or grass fires burning 22 not yet contained. An evacuation centre has been set up at St Mary’s Catholic College in Casino for those who were forced to flee.

Firefighters trying to stop the blaze are battling strong winds and hot conditions, which are expected to continue for several hours. The strong winds are blowing embers ahead of the firefront, creating spot fires that are threatening properties before the main firefront arrives. Earlier in the day RFS spokesman Greg Allan said the challenging conditions were not tipped to ease until later in the week.

“We’re probably not going to see any reprieve until tomorrow,” he told AAP.

“We’ve been seeing very strong westerly winds pushing that fire towards the east, still very high temperatures and very low humidity.”

HOMES EVACUATED IN QUEENSLAND

In Queensland, more than 30 fire crews battled to save houses as a ferocious fire tore through Laidley in the Lockyer Valley, 90km west of Brisbane, on Tuesday.

Fire crews managed to contain the fire at about 10.40pm, but locals said it was the most ferocious blaze they had ever experienced.

“I’ve lived here all my life, this is one of the worst fires I’ve ever seen,” Joan Body told the Courier Mail.

“We don’t know really until we find our family and friends, if they’re alright.”

Emergency warnings have also been issued for three other bushfires burning in northern NSW.

The out-of-control blazes at Kildare Road at Tenterfield and Long Gully Road at Drake triggered emergency warnings on Tuesday afternoon.

The Tenterfield blaze has since been contained, with crews to remain on the scene overnight to work to contain the fire.

The fire burning in the Drake area is currently over 72,160 hectares in size, has crossed over the Clarence River and is continuing to burn in an easterly direction.

“Residents in the areas of Ridge Road, North Ewingar Road, Grandview Road, Hunters Road, Valley View Road and Peckhams Road should take shelter as the fire approaches,” the RFS said.

Amid sweltering heat on Tuesday total fire bans were enacted in the far north coast, north coast, New England and northern slopes areas, which are all experiencing severe fire danger.

People living in the worst-affected areas have been warned to ensure they have an escape plan.

Despite a cooler weather forecast from midweek — with temperatures expected to drop to the mid-20s — continued dry conditions meant fire dangers would not immediately fall away.

Elderly couple missing from bushfire-ravaged property

An elderly couple living outside Busbys Flat is missing after bushfires ravaged northern NSW Wednesday. The couple's car and home were destroyed by the fire. The Rural Fire Service's Ben Shepherd said he was concerned for the couple's welfare given they had been missing for 24 to 48 hours. An elderly couple has been confirmed dead in northern NSW after a bushfire which started more than a month ago due to a lightning strike.

Authorities had been looking for a 77-year-old man and 68-year-old woman missing from Coongbar, 70 kilometres southwest of Casino, after the Long Gully fire flared up on Tuesday.

They’ve since been named in media reports as married couple Bob Lindsey and Gwen Hyde.

“It’ll be fairly devastating for us all,” local man Ken Crowther told Ten News tonight.

Mr Lindsey and Ms Hyde reportedly met late in life.

Friend Carol Dillon told The Daily Telegraph the pair had married just three years ago.

“I’m hoping it was very quick,” Ms Dillon said of their deaths.

Superintendent Toby Lindsay told reporters this afternoon NSW Police had attended a property at Deadmans Creek in Coongbar on Wednesday “in relation to concerns for residents”.

“Unfortunately, a short time ago, two human remains have been identified,” he said.

“I can confirm a 77-year-old male and a 68-year-old female are believed to be the people that have died at this premises.”

Supt Lindsay said the coroner has been advised of the deaths as a result of the Long Gully bushfire, which was considered “not suspicious”.

“We have no further information in regards to the families. To a wider extent the families have certainly been apprised and close family liaison has occurred today,” he said.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has shared her condolences.

So saddened to hear about the loss of life in the bushfires in Northern NSW. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected.

NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons described it as a tragic end to the search.

“It’s a horrible outcome,” he said.

Mr Fitzsimmons said the Long Gully fire has been burning for many weeks near Drake but flared up again on Tuesday and spread across the Clarence River, impacting the rural areas of Ewingar and Coongbar.

Fire investigators have determined it began as the result of a lightning strike on September 5.

Mr Fitzsimmons said the couple’s bodies were found inside a “significantly damaged” home and confirmed no other people remained unaccounted for.

“You’re talking about a remote, relatively isolated place that’s been heavily impacted by fire,” he said.

Earlier, NSW RFS Inspector Ben Shepherd said authorities “started off with around about a dozen people that were unaccounted for”.

Richmond Valley mayor Robert Mustow told ABC the loss of a local timber mill would hurt 30 employees and have a “big impact on our community”.

The Brisbane-to-Sydney rail line has been cut and won’t be operational again for an estimated five days, the mayor added.

NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance tweeted that stretches of the rail line had been damaged and the Rappville rail bridge destroyed.

It’s believed the fire that ripped through the small village of Rappville on Tuesday afternoon may have been deliberately lit with NSW Emergency Services Minister David Elliott labelling the potential arson a “bastard act”.

Mr Fitzsimmons says in the absence of any other obvious cause the blaze is being treated as suspicious.

“We’ve got to call it out — it’s a heinous crime, a criminal act,” he told Nine.

Supt Lindsay this afternoon said all fires are treated with suspicion until proven otherwise.

Strikeforce Cleander has been formed to investigate the cause of the fire.

The Busbys Flat and Drake fires, which joined together in recent days, have burned 115,000 hectares. At least 29 homes, two community facilities and 72 outbuildings have been destroyed, with more damage expected to found.

Mr Fitzsimmons said 34 bushfires continue to burn across NSW, eight of which remain out of control. However, all fires are currently at the lower “advice” alert level after a number of emergency warnings were downgraded on Wednesday.

Allan Robertson lost his Rappville home and was left with the clothes he was wearing, his phone and “my worst thongs”.

He said he was uninsured and his partner was in palliative care. “It was just like a massive fireball. There was nothing you could do. The heat was horrendous,” he told Ten on Wednesday.

The NSW RFS said a number of residents were treated for minor burns and breathing difficulties.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Thursday said the Federal Government will provide “whatever assistance is necessary”.

The RFS says residents likely won’t be able to return home for a number of days given trees are down across roads and powerlines are on the ground. The fire service also warned that even though better conditions were forecast today, blazes could flare again.
