Palms Las Vegas has closed its 8-table poker room, which had struggled since it moved to a new location within the casino in 2012.
The Palms poker room was opened by CG Technology, commonly referred to by its previous name, Cantor Gaming. CG Technology is the operator of the adjoining race and sports book. The poker room was moved to the sports book area in 2012 after years in an area now occupied by the rewards center and high limit slots.
Palms still has some full pay Video poker, but not as many as they had. They also removed all comps and promos from some of them and reduced points on some others. The poker situation keeps changing, right now it's in the sports book running 1/2 NL and 2/6 spread. Plenty of night life here, but the rooms were only average from what I would expect.
Palms confirmed the closure with USPoker. A Palms representative told us via email, “Palms Casino Resort has discontinued poker. The former poker room is now part of the race and sports book space which is operated by CG Technology”.
“We plan to utilize the space from the poker room to cater to the growing popularity of our race and sports book offering”, said Hannah Sloane, a spokesperson at CG Technology. Like the poker room, the race and sports book was remodeled in 2012.
The poker room was a sports bettor’s dream. The tables were surrounded by the sports book. Poker players never missed a second of sports action while at the tables. Tickets could be written or cashed just a few steps away.
In January, Palms launched unprecedented poker promotions. This included dropping the rake to $1 and taking up to $4 per hand to fund promotions. That effort failed to draw sufficient action. The promotional pool was $22,000 in the negative from the generous offers, according to a former manager of the room. The promos were abandoned just weeks after being implemented.
CG Technology eventually threw in the towel on the poker room. Palms took over management of poker operations on April 1, 2014. CG Technology remained the race and sports book operator.
New management announced a $3 rake for no limit and pot limit games. These games did not qualify for any promotions as no additional drop was taken. This made Palms the best place in Nevada to play no limit or pot limit games in terms of rake. That was not enough to help keep the poker tables open.

This move follows poker room closures at M Resort, Riviera, El Cortez, Sunset Station and Circus Circus in the past year.

Palms closed its poker room in June, 2014
The Palms Casino on West Flamingo Road, Las Vegas, offers a small yet varied selection of poker action to tourists and local players. Now running under the ownership of Cantor Gaming, the Palms poker room is a very modern development, apparently modeled on a “Crucible Theatre” design. This spacious spherical room contains around 10 cherry red poker tables and accompanying seats in its center. The middle of the room is marked by a similarly bright red carpet. The outer wall is mounted with its own complete circle of television screens, which stream more than 20 different television channels for poker players. To access the poker room, navigate your way through to the restrooms — the tables are not far from the sportsbook.
The poker play at The Palms is predominately comprised of no-limit and limit hold’em cash games up to a height of $4-$8. Other games and higher stakes do run occasionally, although this is entirely dependent upon there being a sufficient level of player interest expressed to the management. The maximum rake in all cash games is capped at $3. Players at The Palms earn comps at the rate of $1 per hour. These are tracked by the Club Palms Card. Along with chips and straight cash, comps are a possible method of payment for tableside food delivery and the other services you would expect from a Las Vegas poker room.
The Palms rewards its poker players with several popular poker room promotions, A holiday cash giveaway is the current major promo. This random drawing pays players between $100 and $1,000 every 2 hours. All players who win a hand with something better than a straight are given a ticket entry for this promotion. There are also NFL promos, which usually revolve around a splash pot cash giveaway whenever the home team scores.
