Useful information on Tanzania
General: Tanzania, officially the United Republic of Tanzania, is a country in East Africa that is bordered by Kenya and Uganda on the north, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo on the west, and Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique on the south. To the east it borders the Indian Ocean. In 1996 government offices were transferred from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma, making Dodoma the country's political capital. Dar es Salaam remains the principal commercial capital. Tanzanians are welcoming and well disposed towards visitors. But you should be sensitive to local culture. Loud or aggressive behaviour, drunkenness, foul language and disrespect, especially towards older people, will cause offence. The Internet domain ending is .tz, the International dialling code is +255, the International access code is 000, the language is English and Swahili (also called Kiswahili). Electricity mains voltage: 230V.
Visa: Entry Visa costs US$50 (or €50 - paying in US$ works out much less than €50) for three months. If you select 'for business' as your purpose of visit, there is an additional fee of US$100.
Major cities: Arusha, Bagamoyo, Bukoba, Dar-es-Salaam (commercial capital), Dodoma (political capital), Kigoma, Lindi, Mbeya, Morogoro, Moshi, Mtwara, Musoma, Mwanza, Shinyanga, Singida, Songea, Sumbawanga, Tabora, Tanga, Ujiji, Zanzibar.
Motoring: Car rental is available in Tanzania but may not be the safest or cheapest way to get around. Most of the roads are not in great shape so driving can take longer and a car with 4WD is a must. You are likely to need to show proof of an international driver’s license as well as a major credit card to secure your rental. Tanzanians drive on the left side of the road.
Currency: The legal currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TSh); 1 Tanzanian shilling = 100 cents. The USD and the Euro are generally accepted, the USD more than the Euro. US Dollar bills earlier than the year 2000 are not accepted. As of 23 December 2008, US$ 1 = TSh 1315; €1 = TSh 1843; GB£ 1 = TSh 1929.
Smoking: Smoking is allowed in casinos. In restaurants there are usually two areas: smoking and non-smoking.
Transportation: There are several modes of transportation while travelling in Tanzania; by bus, mini-bus, train, taxi and air. There are plenty of buses available in Tanzania and it is by far the most economical way to get around, but they are often extremely crowded. The shared mini-bus called 'dalla-dalla' is a very popular mode of transportation for the locals. They are privately owned and are a great way to travel shorter distances between towns or within bigger cities. There are set routes but a passenger may disembark where he pleases. If you hop on a dalla-dalla, be prepared to squeeze your way on as they are very crowded. There are two major railway lines in Tanzania that carry passengers and both are connected to Dar es Salaam. Taxis are available in all major cities and towns. You will need to bargain with your driver to get a fair price. Bicycle taxis and motorbike taxis (moda-modas) are also common. Travelling by air is a quick way to travel within the country and domestic flights are not too expensive. Two recommended airlines to use are Air Tanzania and Precision Air.
Airports: DAR Dar es Salaam International Airport, DOD Dodoma, GIT Geita, IRI Iringa Nduli, TKQ Kigoma, JRO Kilimanjaro, KIY Kilwa, LKY Lake Manyara, LDI Lindi Kikwetu, LUY Lushoto, MFA Mafia Island, XMI Masasi, MBI Mbeya, MYW Mtwara, MUZ Musoma, MWN Mwadui, MWZ Mwanza, NCH Nachingwea, JOM Njombe, PMA Pemba Island Wawi, SEU Seronera, SHY Shinyanga, SGX Songea, SUT Sumbawanga, TBO Tabora, TGT Tanga, ZNZ Zanzibar Kisauni.
